How do most D&D characters run at 13.63 mph?

With a move speed of 30, and a run of x4, how do most D%26amp;D races run almost as fast as the world record holder for a 4 minute mile? It just seems preposterous. Commoners move at that speed too! Did no one think that over?|||30 FT

2 X base movement is a run.

2 X 30 = 60 Ft = 18.288 meters. A mile is 1610 meters. Equals a 8:48 mile.

4 X base movement is a SPRINT (which cannot be done in consecutive turns OR when encumbered).

4 X 30 = 120 FT. = 36.576 meters. One turn equals 6 seconds.

So 36.576 meters in 6 seconds converts to 100 meters in 16.40 seconds.

Which is a pretty conservative sprint. (Not to mention encumberance which most people "fail to remember" to factor in).

Now commoners can move at the same pace, sure. But they also have to be un-encumbered, and since they generally have a much lower strength (8-10) they become encumbered fairly quickly.

Review your rules.
