Is The Green Monkey overrated?

He warrants a mention as arriving at Saratoga "from Belmont Park Saturday at about 8:30 a.m." on the bloodhorse.com notes. He hasn't started yet - is expected to debut at Saratoga...said to be "professional".

He's well bred, pretty but there's a lot of well bred pretty horses that bring lots of money that don't pan out on the track. Any thoughts/ideas from others as to his potential?|||No I don't think he's overrated necessarily. He is an oddity, a curiosity as the most expensive sales horse ever. Everyone will be watching him but no one is hyping him - basically he's not rated so he can't really be overrated. As for his price, it really has less to do with the horse himself and the pissing match between Coolmore and Godolphin. If those two entities are up against each other they'd fight tooth and nail to win a beauty pageant.

But I admit they sure spent alot on him.|||A $16 million 2 year old. The only winners in this case were the ones that sold the horse.|||If you will consider the amount of money he might earn on the racetrack in his lifetime, before being sent to stud, he is definately "overrated" for the purposes of wagering on the races he will run in. It will be nearly impossible for him to win his price back from purses won even in the best of circumstances.





His true value to the owner lies in stud fees from breeding him as a stallion. The horse owners are the true gamblers in horseracing. They pay all expenses for the chance at large purse money in the graded stakes races. If this horse can win a race like the KY Derby or the Breeders Cup Classic his value at stud alone will exceed his purchase price.





This is the risk the owners have chose to bear. It will be very intresting to see how he performs into his triple crown season. His value for wagering will be comprimised by all of the attention and high expectations foisted on him. The Green Monkey has much to prove before he can reach the point where he is a profitable investment.





This is simply my opinion as a serious fan of horse racing.|||As I'm not in a position to spend $16,000 on a horse let alone $16,000,000 I can't really judge, but history shows that top priced horses rarely win back the purchase price. He will have a better chance to breed back the money.





If he can run like his broodmare sire and breed like his paternal grandfather he would be a bargain.
