Micheal Johnson in the 100m?

Micheal johnson is the current 400m world record holder and the former 200m world record holder with a time of 19.32 so 19.32 divided by 2=9.66 which at that time would have been a world record so why did he not run the 100m?|||Your math is correct but you're overlooking the fact that he has to accelerate from a complete stop to full speed at the beginning of the race. The slowest part of a sprinter's race is coming out of the blocks at the beginning of the race and they accelerate until they achieve and then hold their maximum speed for the rest of the race. This "slow period" of acceleration is present in his 200m time, but then he holds his maximum speed for the remainder of the race. When we look at his time in the 200m we see the slow period averaged with his maximum speed for most of the distance. If he were to run the 100, this slow period of acceleration would make up a larger proportion of the shorter race, dragging down his overall time, and making it unlikely that Michael Johnson could have run the 100 in half the time it took him to run the 200m.

If this was helpful, I'd appreciate it if you marked this answer as a good one. Thanks!|||jvoorhees is spot on there. the acceleration speed of sprinters is around 20/30metres and in that time you arent at full speed. id give him best answer...even if his name is that of a killers! lol|||I think it's because he enjoyed the 200m and 400m more.
